It was launched in February, 2000, with publication of Plays and Playwrights for the New Millennium (now out of print, as is Plays and Playwrights 2003, 2004, and 2005). NYTE embarked on this program so as to extend its mission by publishing a yearly anthology of plays by emerging playwrights. In 2003 the Library of Congress designated Plays and Playwrights as a serial publication issuing ISSN 1546-1319 for all future volumes.
In 2006 an additional volume was published, Playing With Canons: Explosive New Works from Great Literature by America's Indie Playwrights. These volumes contain 137 original plays by 155 different playwrights. Most important, about half of the plays we have published have gone on to new productions as a direct result of publication—in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, London, Edinburgh, Israel, and even as far away as Australia and New Zealand. Three of the plays have been filmed and seen on the indie circuit. In almost every case, these productions earned their playwrights cash royalties for the first time in their careers.
Publishing as e-books
In 2010 NYTE Small Press began reissuing the out of print books in an ebook format that can be read on amazon's kindle, barnes and nobles' nook, and as an e-book using other types of readers. Plays and Playwrights for the New Millennium - the e-book was the first to be reissued in this format. We have since added Plays and Playwrights 2003, Plays and Playwrights 2004, and our newest anthology Plays and Playwrights 2011.
The goals of NYTE Small Press are:
- To encourage productions of these plays outside New York City
- To enhance the reputations and foster the professional development of the playwrights
- To contribute to the published base of American dramatic literature to advance the crafts of playwriting and theatre
